Apple has officially announced the iPhone 16e shortly after CEO Tim Cook had teased 'the newest member of the family'.

This will be a cheaper and more accessible version of the latest iPhone model, though it'll still pack many of the features which Apple customers would expect from the newest stuff.

Pre-orders for the new phone start soon on 21 February, while the device officially releases on 28 February.

You might have noticed that iPhone prices have increased somewhat in recent years, so you'll still need to set aside some money if you want to get this new model and reckon it's time to trade up.

How much is the iPhone 16e?

The cheapest version will go on sale at £599 for the 128GB model, while a 256GB iPhone 16e will cost you £699 and you'll have to part with £899 to get your hands on the 512GB version.

iPhone 16e features

Durable design

As for what's under the covers of that aluminium with glass back phone, it runs on an A18 chip with a four core GPU.

Apple also says it contains the first ever cellular modem designed by the company, called the C1, while you'll be be viewing things on a Super Retina XDR display just the same as you'd get on an iPhone 16, though this screen display size is 6.1 inches.

It also comes with Face ID, wireless charging and a USB-C port so you can plug all manner of things into it.

Powerful camera system

While there's only one camera sticking out of the back of this thing it's a 48MP Fusion, the same main camera you'll find on the rest of the iPhone 16 range, though this model doesn't come with the ultra wide camera that you hopefully never use.

Advanced Apple Intelligence

What it also does is have support for Apple Intelligence, the tech company's on-phone AI system which is only available on newer models of iPhone.

The phone's AI features include image editing tools and ChatGPT integration with privacy protection, while on the side of the phone is the Action Button which you can switch to your favourite action, while the device will handily run iOS 18.

Breakthrough battery life

According to Apple, the 16e has the best battery life out of any of its phones with a 6.1 inch display, claiming the upcoming model is capable of 'lasting up to six hours longer than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours longer than all generations of iPhone SE'.

Apple also claims the 16e's core CPU can be up to 80 percent faster than an iPhone 11, and is built for 'delivering fast and reliable 5G cellular connectivity'.

"iPhone 16e packs in the features our users love about the iPhone 16 lineup, including breakthrough battery life, fast performance powered by the latest-generation A18 chip, an innovative 2-in-1 camera system, and Apple Intelligence,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing.

"We’re so excited for iPhone 16e to complete the lineup as a powerful, more affordable option to bring the iPhone experience to even more people."

And that's the iPhone 16e, see you in September when Apple releases the iPhone 17 with a bunch of new features.
