Saved By The Bell Creators Apologise For Joking About Selena Gomez's Kidney Transplant

It's not that funny, and it's really weird

The creators of the rebooted Saved By The Bell have apologised after loads of people criticised the show for joking about Selena Gomez's kidney transplant.

To be fair, it's a pretty low blow making a joke about a medical procedure that could have left Gomez seriously ill or worse, but it's also absolutely bizarre, too.

In the show, one of the Bayside High students can be heard to say: "I know for a fact that Selena Gomez's kidney donor was Justin Bieber's mom.

"God, I wish that I had my phone so that I could prove it."

Another kid responds: "Prove what? That you're an idiot?

"It was Demi Lovato's kidney. They're best friends, like you and I were."

So, the even stranger thing about this is that it's been well-documented that Gomez's donor kidney came from her mate Francia Raisa, who then gave an interview saying that Gomez could have died as a result of the surgery.

Later on in the show, some graffiti can be read on the back wall of the school hall that reads: "Does Selena Gomez even have kidneys?"

NBC

Seriously, what on earth are they on about here?

Anyway, people calling for the show to 'Respect Selena Gomez' and showing their anger towards the show's 'disgusting' and 'unnecessary' digs at her.

One Selena fan account wrote: "Saved by the Bell, that's disgusting. Selena almost lost her life, jokes about her kidney transplant is NOT FUNNY. Respect Selena Gomez."

Another said: "A TV show called 'saved by the bell' has 'does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?' written on the wall. this is so disgusting and unnecessary. Selena doesn't deserve this.

"RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ."

A third wrote: "Joking about someone's disease is not funny whatsoever. It's just so cruel and unjust. Selena doesn't deserve that & no one else deserves that either.

"RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ."

In the aftermath of all of this online ill will, Peacock, NBCUniversal, and the show's executive producers have issued a joint statement to Variety in which they've apologised profusely for the jokes and the strange graffiti.

The statement reads: "We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena's health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC."

Responding to the apology, Gomez's actual donor Raisa wrote on Twitter: "Appreciate the apology but let's not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall."
