Body found close to where missing identical sisters were last seen in Aberdeen

A body has been found close to where a pair of missing identical sisters were last seen in Aberdeen.

From a set of triplets, Eliza and Henrietta Huszti were last seen near the River Dee on 7 January. The 32-year-olds had been spotted on CCTV cameras nearby Aberdeen Boat Club.

Detectives previously said the sisters had visited the Victoria Bridge, where they were last seen, the day before their disappearance.

Police Scotland explained it had been made aware of a body spotted in the River Dee, near Queen Elizabeth Bridge, at about 7:55am this morning (31 January).

The force added: "The body has been recovered from the water and inquiries are ongoing."

Earlier this week, police said searches of the River Dee and harbour area had ended. The superintendent said enquiries to trace the sisters would be ongoing and noted that 'coastal areas, both north and south of Aberdeen city, will continue to be searched and any further information received by police will be acted upon'.

Superintendent David Howieson of Police Scotland added: "I would again stress there is nothing to suggest any suspicious circumstances or criminality."

Officers had not been treating it as a criminal investigation and rather as a missing persons inquiry. Howieson said a theory was the sisters had 'entered the water for reasons unknown'.

The women, originally from Hungary, moved to Scotland around 10 years ago and had apparently been saving to buy their own home.

In the early hours of 7 January, around the same time as they were captured in CCTV footage, a text was sent to Henrietta's phone to their landlady, indicating the pair wouldn't be returning to the flat.

Her phone was then disconnected from the network and inactive since.

Their brother, Jozsef, told the BBC that the family weren't aware of the women's plans to end their tenancy and didn't 'understand this whole thing'.

"That they wrote a message to their landlady, that they wanted to immediately end their tenancy agreement. We didn't have any information about that," he said.

"So that's the strange thing, that the girls didn't tell us anything about that.

"They never mentioned any such plan. Even when my mother spoke to them on the Saturday, they didn't mention anything about it, that they had any plan to move out."

A translated statement on behalf of the family was also issued to the BBC, asking for privacy.

"We kindly ask everyone for respect," the statement reads. "Please do not spread any unfounded rumours."
