Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as prime minister and that can only mean one thing - the hot podium guy is back.

Yes, in a country that often cares very little for politics, it seems as if many viewers were more keen to catch a glimpse of the man who brings out the podium for speeches outside Downing Street, which means that his appearances have been pretty common over the last few years.

Sound engineer Tobias Gough first went viral back in 2019 for Theresa May's resignation and he was spotted again for Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. God we have a lot of resignations don't we.

While the position of prime minister might be as cursed as the defence against the darks arts teacher position, Gough is something of an ever-present and it seems as if his fans were delighted to see him back in action again this morning as Starmer confirmed that he would be leaving number 10.

‘Hot Podium guy is here. That means it’s official’, tweeted an excited @superTV247, while others suggested that ‘maybe he’s taking over’ the country’s leadership.

‘It’s officially now a Hot Podium Guy summer’, said @Ad_Giers.

‘Have just had to explain the concept of hot podium guy to my best friend, a very senior journalist who doesn’t work in the uk, and now she thinks we’re all nuts’, joked @LaurenMaeve.

‘Just let “Hot Podium guy” be the new prime minister. He’s really the only one who has stuck with us over the last few years!!’, @ThisIsMeUK1 demanded.

However, it's not just his job to stand there and look good while carrying out those podiums with those muscles of his, as he also tests the microphones and even helps to design the lecterns.

So, whoever ends up replacing Starmer at Downing Street will likely work with Gough one day to design a lectern of his own, and if we happen to see the hot podium guy step outside, then we probably know that things are about to get serious.

The appearance of the mythical podium man wasn't the only thing distracting us from Starmer's actual resignation speech however as we were also treated to some live music in the form of Beethoven's Ode to Joy, something the Labour leader spoke about being representative of his party back in 2023, only to have it played as he calls time on his two years at Downing Street.
