Devastating update on Brit and fiancé who were found dead in hotel after drinking limoncello

An update has been issued in the case of a couple who were found dead after drinking limoncello.

The bodies Greta Marie Otteson, 33, and her South African partner Arno Els Quinton, 36, were found on Boxing Day at the Hoi An Silverbell Villa, which they were running and where they'd rent rooms out to travellers.

After going out for dinner on Christmas Eve, it's reported that Otteson sent a message to her parents, claiming she could see 'black spots' in what the pair called the 'worst hangover ever'.

The newly engaged couple moved out to Vietnam in February last year and after a dinner followed by two bottles of limoncello being delivered to their villa, they fell ill.

Investigators believe it was a homemade concoction and even laced with methanol as Otteson, from Wales, deciding to 'sleep it off' instead of seeking advice from a health professional.

Police found that the pair did indeed die of methanol poisoning linked to the drinks, with the barman allegedly responsible for making the drink being charged in February.

He remains detained while investigations ensue.

Police detailed that he 'violated' food safety regulations by 'using used 70-degree medical grade alcohol, along with filtered water, lemon peel and white sugar to create two bottles of limoncello'.

But it has now emerged via the BBC that Otteson's parents, Paul and Susan, visited the pair back on 24 November, and enjoyed some free shots of limoncello at 'Good Morning Vietnam'.

They then decided to order bottles of the drink to the couple's home as a Christmas gift a month later.

Looking back on the incident, they said that the wait for a conclusion has been 'unbearable' with no updates from police or an apology from the restaurant.

The Vietnamese government has detailed that the offence carries a maximum prison sentence of seven to 15 years.

"It's about accountability," Paul said, before adding: "We can't move on."

The parents said they can't lay the ashes to rest until they receive justice, with Paul explaining: "Justice for us would be naming the people responsible and prosecuting them."

Greta and Arno's ashes are currently being stored in two bags in the Ottesons' home in Carmarthenshire, Wales, with a pink bunny on top of one and a blue bear on top of the other.

Speaking of their trip to Vietnam to see the couple and to meet Atno for the first time, Paul said: "It was lovely - we were so happy."

He added that Arno was 'quiet but highly intelligent' and someone 'he would have loved to have as a son in law'.

Methanol is a type of alcohol which can be found in cleaning products, antifreeze, and fuel, sharing similarities to ethanol.

The latter is intended for use in alcoholic drinks, but the former is cheaper and more toxic due to how it is processed by the body.

It's not the first time a methanol-related case has happened in the region either, with those suspected to have methanol poisoning urged to seek medical attention immediately.
