Locals in 'posh' town hit out at Wetherspoons opening on high street

Locals in 'posh' town hit out at Wetherspoons opening on high street

Residents in a quaint English town are hitting amid rumours that there are plans to open a Wetherspoons.

For many Brits, cheap pints and Thursday Curry Club are happily welcomed to their area, but residents in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, are less than impressed with the idea.

The town’s Market Square is home to numerous independent shops and cafes - and one empty spot has had a proposal for a change of use from retail to a ‘public house’.

Although it’s not yet known what the unit - which used to be the site of an M&Co shop - will become, speculation is rife that a Wetherspoons could be set to open its doors and some folks aren’t happy.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, one resident said: “I don't think it should be turned into a Wetherspoons as there are plenty of other places in the town.

“There is no need for cheap food and cheap beer lowering the tone and ruining the town.”

The area is already home to Tom Kerridge’s upmarket boozer The Coach, which is a popular spot with locals.

Another resident said: “I don't think there should be a Wetherspoon in the heart of the town. It will spoil the demographic and is going to attract… not the wrong people - just a different demographic.”

While a fellow Marlow inhabitant added: “I don't think is should be turned into a Wetherspoons as there are plenty of other places in the town. An actual shop would be far better.

“We have Tom Kerridge. There is no need for cheap food and cheap beer lowering the tone and ruining the town.”

But not everyone opposes the idea, a bloke who lives in the nearby town of Henley on Thames reckons anyone objecting the idea is bonkers.

Speculation is rife that a Wetherspoons could be set to open in Marlow.

He told the publication: “It's the cheapest pint of IPA in the town. I pay £1.80 a pint. If you go elsewhere, the exact same pint will cost you between £5 and £6.

“Why would you want to pay more than you had to for a pint. I might even have some food on a Friday, maybe some fish and chips or a curry. But there's too much in the curry with the poppadum and the naan. It fills me up.

“A Wetherspoons would be a great thing for Marlow. If they had one, I might pay a visit.”
