BBC staff were not given any further details regarding the decision to sack Scott Mills, according to an internal email.

It was announced yesterday that Mills, who hosted the Radio 2 breakfast show, had been sacked by the broadcaster over allegations regarding his 'personal conduct'.

Confirming the move in a statement, the BBC said: "While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.

Mills' last show was on 24 March, of which he signed off by saying: "Back tomorrow."

The broadcaster has not shared any further details regarding the 53-year-old's axing, with an internal email revealing that staff were also not informed of the decision for Mills' departure.

According to an email seen by The Sun, Acting Director-General Rhodri Talfan Davies said the following regarding the news: "I hope you all understand that we are not able to share any more information."

Davies acknowledged that the sudden and unexpected news would have come as a shock to many, given Mills' high 'profile' at the BBC, before going on to acknowledge the pressure now placed on the rest of the BBC Radio 2 team.

"The Radio 2 team will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when they are able to," he continued.

"In the meantime, I just want to recognise the pressure this puts on them, many of whom have worked with Scott for many years."

Meanwhile, Radio 2 employees learnt of Mills' departure from a statement shared by Lorna Clarke, Director of Music at the BBC, who acknowledged the news was 'sudden and unexpected'.

"I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC," Clarke's statement to staff read (via The Mirror).

"I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.

"Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV.

"I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity."

Mills had worked for BBC Radio since the 1990s, starting out with an early morning slot from 4 am to 7 am. He later moved to a weekend and then early evening slot before swapping Radio 1 for Radio 2 in 2022.

He took over the Breakfast Show from presenter Zoe Ball in November 2024.
