Mum of British lawyer who tragically died after drinking methanol-laced shots reveals her heartbreaking final text

After travelling from Kent to Laos, Sue White was faced with a difficult decision about her daughter's life

The mother of a British lawyer who passed away after drinking methanol-laced shots on holiday has shared her final text message.

Simone White was just 28 when she checked into the Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng, Laos, with two of her friends on 11 November last year.

The Brit was served six shots of vodka by the hostel, which was mixed with Sprite from the local supermarket, on the night that she was allegedly poisoned.

Simone was one of six people who died from suspected methanol poisoning after this.

Her mother made the 16-hour trip from Kent to Laos after being told that White would need emergency brain surgery.

Sue White arrived in Laos with her daughter on life support at the private Kasemrad International Hospital in Vientiane, and was faced with a difficult decision about Simone's life.

She decided to take a tube out of Simone's mouth and unplugged the life support machine, as an inquest in January revealed that the solicitor had died from a bleed on the brain.

The mother has previously opened up on the harrowing experience, admitting that she 'knew she was going to die' after getting a phone call about the situation.

But three months on from the scarring experience, Sue had revealed the final message that Simone sent her, just one day before she had the shots.

Recalling the message on 60 Minutes Australia, she said the text read: "I'm having the best time, you know, it's an absolutely fantastic holiday."

Confirming that it was the last message before the incident occurred, where the 28-year-old texted her mum throughout, Sue clarified: "She'd messaged me as it was all happening but that was the final message I got from her."

One of Simone's friends, Bethany Clarke, also ended up in hospital after others were also offered the free alcoholic shots.

Bethany spoke on the news show, explaining that she watched the bartenders pour the drinks out from a glass bottle with a vodka label on it.

Recalling the aftermath, she said: "You just physically can't move. It's like you are more or less paralysed.

"You can still walk, but everything is much, much, much more difficult than it would be ordinarily, but yeah, mainly fatigue, nausea, I fainted."

Simone was one of six that died after the incident, with 19-year-old Australians Holly Morton-Bowles and Bianca Jones, Danish residents Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, and Freja Sorensen, 21, as well as 57-year-old American James Hutson.

Laos police detained eight hostel employees for questioning over the incident.

While the hostel remains closed, its owners have denied serving illicit alcohol.
