These Career Paths Could Get You Into Work Faster Than You Think

Not everyone wants the traditional route - and these options prove there’s more than one way to build a career you’re proud of

Figuring out your next step can feel like a lot. Whether you’ve just finished your GCSEs, you’re thinking about a career change, or you want to build new skills while earning, deciding which way to turn can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news is there are now more routes than ever into careers you’re genuinely interested in, many focusing on practical skills, real work experience and qualifications employers actually need.

That’s where the UK Governments Skills for Life campaign comes in. Highlighting government-backed training and qualification options designed to help people gain the skills, confidence and experience needed to build a future-proof career, there’s everything from apprenticeships and T Levels to Higher Technical Qualifications and Skills Bootcamps designed to help explore industries, build skills and get into work.

So, what are your options?

Apprenticeships: earning while you learn

If learning on the job rather than sitting in a classroom all day sounds more appealing, an apprenticeship could be for you. Available to anyone aged 16 or over, they’re real jobs where you earn a wage while learning from experienced professionals, and with more than 700 different apprenticeships across industries like construction, digital, healthcare, engineering, business and creative sectors, there’s surely something that floats your boat.

Completely free to do, apprenticeships usually last between one and five years, and during that time you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop practical skills and work towards recognised qualifications, ranging from Level 2 right up to degree apprenticeships.

For 17-year-old Oscar Corbett, an apprenticeship offered exactly the kind of learning environment he was looking for. A carpentry apprentice with Complete Fixing Solutions in London, Oscar left school at 15 knowing he wanted a more hands-on route. Since then, he’s been learning directly on construction sites, working alongside experienced carpenters and building his confidence along the way.

“Leaving school at 15, I was keen to get started in the world of work and follow in my grandfather’s footsteps,” Oscar says. “My two-year carpentry apprenticeship has given me the chance to learn by doing - developing practical skills, confidence and leadership every day on site.”

He’s already worked on projects in historic buildings, including Winston Churchill’s former office, and says the experience has helped him build teamwork and communication skills alongside his trade.

“The support from my employers has made a huge difference,” he adds. “You get to learn from experienced professionals and make a real impact from day one.”

T Levels: combining study with industry experience

If you like the idea of classroom learning but still want real industry experience, T Levels could be for you. Designed for 16- to 19-year-olds, they’re equivalent in size to three A Levels, focus on technical skills, with courses lasting two years and including a 45-day industry placement, giving students the chance to gain hands-on experience with employers. More than 200 schools and colleges already offer T Levels, covering subjects like construction, engineering, digital, health, education and business.

For Cynthia Lakos, a 17-year-old student at York College, who is studying Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning, choosing a T Level helped her discover where she wanted her career to go.

“Deciding to take a T Level after my GCSEs was the right step for me,” she says. “I’ve always enjoyed creative subjects and wanted a course that combined practical work with academic study.”

Her industry placement with construction company Wates turned out to be a key moment, with spending time on active building sites allowing her to try surveying work and see how projects come together in real life.

“My industry placement gave me hands-on experience and opened my eyes to career paths I’d never considered,” she says. “I’ve grown in confidence, sharpened my communication skills and discovered what I’m truly passionate about.”

Cynthia now hopes to continue into an apprenticeship and eventually become a site manager.

Other routes to build new skills

Apprenticeships and T Levels aren’t the only options. For people aged 18 and over, Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) offer another route into skilled careers. These Level 4 and 5 qualifications, including Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas and foundation degrees, focus on developing technical skills employers are looking for and usually take one to two years to complete.

Then there are Skills Bootcamps which, for adults looking to retrain or move into a new industry, provide a shorter, flexible option. Lasting up to 16 weeks and focusing on industries where employers need skilled workers, including digital technology, construction, green energy and health and social care, many also include a guaranteed job interview at the end, and what could be better than that?

A new qualification – V Levels – has been introduced by government, which offer transformational new qualifications – equivalent to an A level – from September 2027. With learning designed around real jobs and the skills employers need, young people will be able to take the very first V Levels in education, finance, and digital from September next year, under landmark reforms to help young people secure well-paid jobs.

Finding the route that works for you

The days of there being just one “right” path into a career are pretty much gone. Some people want to get stuck into work straight away through an apprenticeship, others prefer the mix of study and industry experience that T Levels offer, and plenty of adults are deciding it’s never too late to learn something new. The Skills for Life campaign pulls together a range of these opportunities, helping people find routes into real careers and build the skills employers need. If you’re still figuring out your next move, it’s definitely worth checking out what’s available.
