Doctors told woman she needed finger amputating after proposal went horribly wrong

A bloke suffered quite the blunder when asking for his partner's hand in marriage, as she almost had her finger amputated.

Jacob Bugliarello and his fiancée, Iona Hadaway, spent their first evening as an engaged couple in A&E after his romantic proposal went horribly wrong.

The 20-year-old got down on one knee in an Italian restaurant on 10 August, much to the delight of his other half.

So when Iona, 23, realised the engagement ring was a bit tight, she squeezed it onto her finger in 'excitement'.

She then realised that this had been a huge mistake, as it simply would not budge no matter how much she tried to manoeuvre it.

Iona explained they had gone to their parents with the good news, and when she tried to take the ring off to show it off to her mother-in-law, she simply couldn't.

"I tried to put the ring on and I knew it was a bit too small but I forced it on anyway," the bride-to-be said. "Because it's exciting isn't it? And I wanted the ring on.

"[Jacob's] mum wanted to see the ring close up so I tried to take it off and it would not come off."

The corporate banker recalled how they used various techniques to try and get the ring off, such as dousing her finger in washing up liquid.

She also wrapped rope around it in the hopes it could then be pulled off, but this was useless too.

By this point, Iona's finger was also ballooning in size.

She ended up taking herself to A&E department at Crewe Leighton Hospital a short time later, where doctors repeated the removal methods she'd tried at home.

Again, this was futile - so the decision was made for the ring to be cut off.

Medics warned that if she'd have headed to the hospital the following morning and left the ring on overnight, she'd have lost a digit.

The lack of circulation would have likely caused gangrene and tissue death to Iona's ring finger.

The newly engaged woman, from Winsford, Cheshire, said: "I could have lost my finger. There was no circulation at all in my finger.

"I was gutted but I was like, 'can you just get [the ring] off because I've had enough now'.

"I'm engaged but I don't feel engaged because I've not got my ring on. Everyone wants to see it and I'm like, 'I've only got a picture'."

Iona hopes that a jeweller might be able to work his magic on the ring and fix it somehow.

Jacob explained he purchased the size R ring, believing it would perfectly fit Iona because another ring she wears on her other hand is also size R.

His fiancée said they are now looking forward to planning their wedding for 2027 and house hunting together.

Speaking of her love for her future husband, who she was introduced to by a mutual friend earlier this year, Iona said: "When you know you know, don't you?"

She explained Jacob had actually intended to pop the question when they headed on holiday to Turkey this month.

"I'm glad he didn't do it in Turkey otherwise, I would have had to go to the hospital in Turkey," she added.
