A robbery suspect was so chuffed that his case was dropped that he told the judge he'd be cracking out the lager to celebrate - specifically, a Stella Artois.

Michael Jenkins, 21, was due to stand trial later this year, after denying robbing a 28-year-old man in Workington, Cumbria, on May 22.

However, following a review of the evidence this week, the Crown told Judge Anna Vigars QC that they offered 'no evidence', meaning the case was dropped and Jenkins was free to leave.

After Judge Vigars told him at Carlisle Crown Court that he was free to go home, Jenkins told her: "I'm going to have some Stella tonight!"

Jenkins, of Workington, had been on remand in custody when he appeared in court via video link from Durham Prison last Friday.

Prosecutor Gerard Rogerson told him: "This matter has been reviewed.

"There is one count of robbery on the indictment and the decision has been taken by the Crown Prosecution Service to offer no evidence."

Judge Vigars then responded by saying: "I will enter a not guilty verdict."

Addressing Jenkins directly, she then said: "The CPS have reviewed your case.

"They have decided they are not going to pursue it and are not offering any evidence.

"They therefore ask me to enter a not guilty verdict, which I have just done. That brings the case to conclusion."

A thrilled Jenkins replied: "That's brilliant, Your Honour! Very good news."

He added: "I'm going to have some Stella tonight, Your Honour. Thank you very much."

Another person partial to a nice can or two is 93-year-old Olive Veronesi, who went viral recently when she was photographed holding up a sign that said: "I need more beer!!"

Veronesi had been cooped up indoors at her home in Seminole, Pennsylvania, where locals were told to stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Her family photographed her with the sign, also holding a can of Coors Light, and she soon became famous online.

In the interview with KDKA, Veronesi she said to the reporter: "I have a beer every night! I've got some in now, do you want one?"

Speaking about her love of beer, Veronesi continued: "Something to relax, you know? I think it's nice - something for a young lady!"

Thankfully, Coors Light heard her plea and decided to send her a few cases of beer to tide her over. When the 150 cans arrived on her doorstep, she instantly opened one up and knocked it back on her porch like a true legend.
