The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach broke down this afternoon, with riders having to climb down to safety.

The rollercoaster, which is the tallest in the UK, came to a halt earlier today forcing staff from the theme park to scale the ride so they could get visitors back down to the ground, LancsLive reports.

Posting on Twitter, one eye-witness said: "At the Pleasure Beach today, doing a tourist-y day, and the Big One has got stuck near the top.

"They're walking people down it."

Another person said: "OMG. Big one stopped right at top today 12ish and the staff had to walk every one down safely. Well done.

"Think I would have been really scared. Then it was sent round the track empty a few times then we walked home bit of excitement. All worked out OK."

Another posted: "My brother's in Blackpool and just sent a video of people stuck at the top of the Big One and having to walk down to get off it.

"I'd be welded to my seat. They'd have to get me out with a crane."

A fourth joked: "Walking people down the Big One in Blackpool. At least they will get their steps done today."

Social media users were left daunted by the very thought of having to climb down the massive rollercoaster, with one person saying: "Can you Imagine if I was stuck on The Big One, I think I'd be screaming."

Another said: "I'd have stayed in my seat until it started going again."

A spokesperson from Blackpool Pleasure Beach told LADbible: "At 11.30am on Sunday 25th April a stoppage occurred on the Big One lift hill.

"The decision was taken to stop the ride and all riders were safely escorted down the lift hill. The ride was checked and re-opened at approximately 1.00pm."

When the ride opened back in 1994, it was the tallest and steepest rollercoaster in the world at a whopping 213ft - it's still the UK's highest.

A description for the ride on the Blackpool Pleasure Beach website reads: "Brace yourself for The Big One, Pleasure Beach's biggest, fastest and scariest coaster. Feel the adrenaline rush as you climb to a nail biting height of 235ft [above sea level].

"Prepare yourself for the first drop which boasts an incline angle of 65 degrees and at speeds of up to 85mph this roller coaster is an experience like no other!

"The Big One is also one of the longest roller coasters measuring over a mile in length."

The park has been able to reopen as lockdown measures eased on 12 April, allowing outdoor attractions, such as theme parks and zoos, to welcome visitors again.
