The 89-year-old starred it the hit British comedy from 1994 to 2007 and well-known for his character's long, boring and endless stories.

There was quite a comical and forward-thinking storyline where his character actually came out gay on the radio, however no one actually heard because they'd all not tuned into the show in fear his voice would be a drone and bore them.

His agent said in a statement: "We're sad to announce our wonderful client John Bluthal has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

"John provided us all with years of laughter and entertainment. We will miss John hugely."

His former co-star, Dawn French, has tweeted her condolences over the loss of Bluthatl, she said: "Tons of happy laughs remembered today. Cheeky, naughty, hilarious. Bye darlin Bluey."

John was born in Poland in 1929 and eventually got caught up the Nazi invasion which caused him and his Jewish family to flee their home country and head to Austria.

He moved to England in 1956 which is when he started his acting career - bagging his first role as Sid James in Citizen James in the 1960s.

John racked up quite the catalogue of films under his belt as he made appearances in films such as The Beatles' movie A Hard Day's Night, Labyrinth and The Fifth Element.
