Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic condition after swelling discovered on his legs

Being president of the USA isn't an easy job...

Donald Trump has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a chronic health condition affecting his veins, after swelling was noticed on his legs.

Speculation has been growing about the state of the US leader's health over recent months, as the 79-year-old has been photographed with bruised hands and swollen ankles on numerous occasions.

The White House had previously brushed off concerns about Trump's health, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously explaining away the president's symptoms as a result of 'frequent handshaking' back in February.

However the continued bruising on Trump's hands, as well as evidence of swelling in his ankles, has led the president to undergo further medical testing.

Leavitt has now revealed the truth about President Trump's health, saying that he is suffering from benign and common condition called chronic venous insufficiency.

Revealing the update at a press conference earlier today (July 17), Leavitt explained that Trump had undergone numerous medical tests to examine the cause of swelling to his legs, as well as the bruising on the back of his right hand.

"The president underwent a comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies. Bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed, and reformed chronic venous insufficiency, a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70," Leavitt told reporters.

"Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease."

She went on to add that the president had undergone further lab work, which included a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel and other cardiac tests.

"All results were within normal limits," she added.

What is chronic venous insufficiency?

According to Cleveland Clinic, chronic venous insufficiency is a condition where veins in the leg become damaged, impacting the flow of blood to a person's heart.

Symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency include swelling in the lower legs (edema), varicose veins and a heavy or full feeling in the legs.

The condition typically impacts people over the age of 50, with your risk of developing the condition increasing the older you get. Treatment is focused around improving blood flow from the legs and can be treated with anything from wearing compression socks to surgery.

Trump isn't the only US leader to suffer health setbacks in recent months, with former President Joe Biden revealing he'd been diagnosed with an 'aggressive' form of prostate cancer back in May.

"Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone," read a statement from the Biden family at the time.

"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians."
