A woman who is accused of shooting and killing her husband allegedly left him with five harrowing last words.

35-year-old Melissa Calumpit, from Idaho, US, allegedly told her twice-estranged husband Travis Haywood Calumpit to meet her on 12 July to reconcile their relationship, according the arrest affidavit obtained by the New York Post.

The wife told police that she had been married to Travis, 37, from 2010 to 2018 and that they had two children (the GoFundMe says they had three children).

On the night of 12 July, Travis was found face-down with a gunshot wound to the chest at a 60-acre campsite near the Oregon border.

Melissa's mother Rosalie Lynn Morris, 59, allegedly helped her devise a plan to lead Travis to a secluded spot to kill him.

But it was after Melissa spoke over the phone to police where she was said to have provided inconsistent and intimate statements.

“Her story changed several times," the probable cause affidavit obtained by People reads. "She ultimately said she had the .380 pistol in her pocket, hit Travis in the head with a rock, and shot him when he charged at her.

“She said she searched for an unregistered firearm to use in the murder and planned to do it herself; however, Melissa wanted to come along.

“Rosalie believed Melissa killed Travis so that Rosalie would not get in trouble.”

Meanwhile, Melissa has denied any involvement.

“Rosalie described Travis as an abusive, drug addict with mental health issues,” police said. “Rosalie said she decided she had to kill Travis and compared it to putting a dog down to save livestock.”

And according to documents, Melissa allegedly provided her dying husband with five last words.

“Melissa said after she shot Travis he asked her ‘Why?’" the documents allege. "I'm sorry. I love you."

Melissa said she moved out of the family home 'due to Travis being physically abusive to the children' and told him to meet her 'to inform him of her intent to divorce him', according to the affidavit.

"Rosalie said Melissa told her Travis was bending down, grabbing phones, and Melissa hit him with a rock and, 'knocked him silly,'" according to Morris' affidavit.

"Rosalie said Melissa told her Travis lunged at her and she shot him one time in the chest," states the affidavit.

Melissa has been charged with first-degree murder and destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence and Rosalie has been charged with aiding and abetting in first-degree murder, and aiding and abetting in the destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence.

Idaho News reports that the duo are currently being held on a $2 million (£1.5 million) bond.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to help Melissa and Travis' children.
