Police officer and three others killed after man opens fire at New York skyscraper

The shooter was identified as a 27-year-old Las Vegas man

A gunman who opened fire in New York City killed a police officer and three others before turning the gun on himself.

Police have identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who had travelled to NYC from Las Vegas in recent days.

He opened fire in the lobby of the Park Avenue tower in Manhattan, with police saying that he shot several people and then allowed a woman to leave one of the building's lifts before taking it up to the 33rd floor to the offices of Rudin Management Company.

He then shot a man and proceeded to the stairwell, where he shot himself.

Images show people leaving the building at around 7pm yesterday (28 July) with their hands up as they fled the scene of the shooting.

Police identified Tamura's car, a black BMW, and found weapons and prescription medication inside.

New York City mayor Eric Adams said that those killed by the gunman were three men and a woman, with another man 'fighting for his life' after being severely injured.

Among the dead was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who had been working in the building as a security guard on a 'paid detail' as the building can pay for police officers to provide extra protection. He was a father of two and his wife is expecting their third child.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said: "He was going the job that we asked him to do. He made the ultimate sacrifice.

"He died as he lived - a hero."

Tisch added that Las Vegas officials said that the gunman had a 'documented mental health history' and they were looking into possible motives that might explain why he drove from Vegas to New York and then killed several people in the skyscraper.

"His motives are still under investigation, and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location," the commissioner said.

The gunman carried what police described as an M4 assault rifle into the skyscraper and opened fire with it, while a revolver and additional ammunition was recovered from his car by officers.

Officials said Tamura started 'spraying' gunfire into the building's lobby as soon as he entered, with him immediately opening fire on an NYPD officer.

The police officer killed had been an immigrant from Bangladesh who had been working for the NYPD since December 2021.

The NYPD said on social media that Officer Islam had 'represented the very best of our department'.

"He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honour his legacy," they said.
