Susan Sarandon among protestors arrested amid Netanyahu UN walkout

Susan Sarandon is among the protestors who were detained by police in chaotic scenes during the UN General Assembly on Thursday (24 September).

The actress was reportedly detained alongside Hacks star Hannah Einbinder who had protested against the arrival of Benjamin Netanyahu with Elliot Page and whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

They all were part of a group protesting outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, with around 100 people reportedly arrested.

Oscar-winning actress Sarandon has been openly critical of the conflict between Palestine and Israel, sporting a t-shirt reading 'fund people not bombs'.

The scenes came during a mass walkout of delegates as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to the podium to speak.

New York City Council members Chi Osse and Jen Gutierrez, NY-13 congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Caleb Hearon were also pictures with NYPD officers.

When Mr Netanyahu walked to the rostrum at the assembly during the afternoon, a mix of cheers, boos and mass walkouts erupted.

Scores of delegates quickly stormed out and a majority of seats sat empty afterwards.

In his speech, Netanyahu defended Israel’s military operations in the Middle East. But his moment on the mic was disrupted by chants in support of Palestine.

“In defending itself, Israel is also defending many of the countries whose delegates just left this hall,” Mr Netanyahu said.

“If there are any other moral cowards who have not yet left the hall, please do so now," he added.

“Now, you want to hear the ultimate irony?” he continued. “Many of the countries whose delegates just left this hall.

"In fact, I want you to know that many of their leaders even thank us privately for taking out Iran’s nukes. It’s hard to imagine more mind-blowing hypocrisy.”

The Palestinian Mission to the UN urged in a message to many of the 193 UN member nations to bring as many staff as possible to the assembly hall and 'collectively walk out of the assembly' once the Israeli prime minister is announced.

“This will send a clear message to Netanyahu and his government that no one is willing to aid, abet, or be complicit in its genocide and war crimes and illegal occupation, which all peace-loving states and peoples demand must come to an end,” the message said.

Israel rejects allegations that it committed genocide and war crimes and is illegally occupying Palestinian territory. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law, but the Israeli government insists they are legal.
