Two Instagram jokers have been jailed for simulating a sex act outside a cathedral in the Russian capital, Moscow.

Ruslani Murodzhonzoda - a Tajik national also known as Ruslan Bobiyev - and Anastasia Chistova have since apologised for their antics, which took place outside the famous St Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, but that hasn't saved them from prison.

They were found guilty of offending the feelings of religious people at Moscow's Tverskoi district court, and will serve 10 months in prison.

After that, Ruslani is also to be deported back to Tajikistan.

They thought it would be funny to pose in front of the iconic cathedral for an Instagram post where it was implied that Chistova was performing an oral sex act on Murodzhonzoda.

Obviously, the Russian authorities didn't find it very amusing in the end.

She was seen to be wearing a police jacket whilst kneeling down in front of him.

It's not too explicit, but it's in fairly poor taste, particularly given the significance of the building.

In a statement after the sentence was handed down, the court announced: "Anastasia Chistova and Ruslani Murodzhonzoda committed public actions expressing clear disrespect for society."

Whilst Ruslani is known as an online prankster, his partner in crime - who is just 19-years-old - is an Instagram model who is described as his girlfriend.

Before she learned of her fate as the sentence was handed down, she shared a post on her Instagram account that said: "I would like to apologise before those whose feelings I hurt by these pictures.

"I didn't think - and simply wanted likes and popularity.

"Now I realise the price of such popularity.

"And I have to answer to the fullest extent of the law with my freedom, public condemnation, the disapproval of my parents and people close to me.

"I am very hurt."

She also seemed to suggest that it was her boyfriend who chose the location for the shoot.

"I just followed him like a dog," she wrote.

In an apology of his own, Ruslani wrote: : "I was posing for pictures next to the cathedral.

"I am sorry.

"I am sincerely sorry, I will never do it again.

"I was taking pictures with a girl wearing police uniform next to me.

"I sincerely apologise.

"I swear I will never do it again."

The couple are the first to receive custodial sentences for this sort of crime, whereas previously offenders have received fines or suspended sentences.

His lawyer says that Ruslani will not appeal the sentence.
