Horrified tourist left in shock at note on receipt after asking for eggs ‘not to be runny’

How do you like your eggs? Sunny side up? Over easy? Whatever you do, don't ask for them to be well-cooked at one restaurant in Italy, as you might get an unexpected surprise.

That's exactly what Brazilian tourist Maria Clara says happened when she visited Victor Lab in Romagna on 19 August and claimed to have found a message on the receipt asking the chef to 'spit' in her food, much to her horror.

Clara says she had asked for her scrambled eggs to be cooked a bit more, but was met with disdain from the waiter. "I was polite. I simply asked if it was possible to have the eggs a little more cooked," she told Italian outlet Corriere. "I was rudely told that they don't make raw eggs there."

According to Clara, the plate arrived with the eggs not to her liking, along with an accompanying salad she had specifically asked not to be included.

"In the end, they arrived very soft, but I didn't ask for them to be recooked. I let it go because I didn't want to argue."

However, she then noticed the alleged X-rated note on the receipt which, in Italian, insulted Clara before adding: "Burn the eggs and spit in them."

The waiter 'went white' when a manager was called

The group initially thought the message was a joke but then grew 'scared' that their food may have been contaminated.

A manager was called and eventually arrived, though Clara claimed they were initially told one wasn't in the building.

The waiter 'went white' and became 'very nervous' and even allegedly tried to destroy the evidence by throwing the receipt in the bin, according to Clara.

"We told him not to do it and that otherwise we would call the police," she said. "He apologised and said it was a joke between him and the chef.

"If I had been rude, I could at least understand someone getting angry. But I wasn't. I simply asked, as politely as possible, for slightly more overcooked eggs.

"I'm still in shock. I can't believe this happened to me."

The restaurant apologised... and then hit back

A negative review of the restaurant, accompanied by a picture of the alleged receipt, was posted on Google, which read: "Going to a place like this and asking for food of questionable origin, accompanied by such poor service, is truly unacceptable."

Replying, the restaurant apologised and said the waiter was a 17-year-old who had only been with them for a fortnight, though they stressed that doesn't excuse what happened.

It said: “The behaviour you reported was absolutely inappropriate and in no way reflects the values, customer service, and professional standards we strive to ensure every day.

"We sincerely apologise once again to you and your companions. Your report has been taken very seriously."

It added that the party's bill was cancelled and that they were offered further complimentary items, which were not accepted.

However, on 22 August, the restaurant uploaded a video on TikTok which seems to make fun of the incident.

In the clip, someone portrays a fussy and demanding customer who orders a meal with 'spit.'

Clara says she has received racist abuse and death threats since the incident went viral but maintains that no one should fear waiters tampering with their food, even if they are being rude.

"At first we thought it was something absurd, written as a joke," she said. "Then we read people saying, 'I did it too.' And we started to think that these things really do happen."

Since the story went viral, the restaurant has been review-bombed on Google, though others have moved to counter that by giving it a full five stars.
