Captain arrested after swell from ship crashes over Mykonos beach injuring tourists

One person has allegedly been 'hospitalised with two broken ribs'

Holidaymakers in Mykonos have reportedly been left injured after a ferry caused a large wave to wash over the beach.

Local media outlet Vradini has reported that two people have been left injured and the captain of the ferry was arrested when the Fast Ferries Andros ship docked at the port of Rafina in mainland Greece on Sunday (21 July).

The horrifying incident was captured on video and has been shared across social media.

It shows the moment the wave reportedly caused by the boat reached all the way down the beach as those in the sea were rushing out of the water for safety.

The dramatic clip then shows the water covering the beach front while tourist belongings were washed out at sea.

Takis Papadakos shared the footage on his Facebook page 'Mykonos, let’s do it!' as he expressed his outrage at the captain.

The captain has reportedly beem arrested on 'Dangerous interference with the transport of means of fixed orbit, ships and aircraft' charges and 314 'Physical injury due to negligence'.

Papadakos claimed that one of the people who were injured were said to have been 'hospitalised with two broken ribs'.

"Congratulations Fast Ferries for the captain of FastFerries Andros you have, he clearly 'respected' the health of the bathers of St. Stephen and passed as close and as fast as ever before, lest he miss 5 minutes of his itinerary!!" Papadakos wrote, via translated text.

"Forward to the profits, who counts human life... then we will all fall from the clouds, huh???

"(The lady on the left of the video was hospitalised with two broken ribs re-evaluation with X-rays in two days, and the video is part of the preliminary investigation by the Port Authority)."

Outlet Vradini took to X to report that 'two bathers were injured at noon on Saturday (21/7) on the beach of Agios Stefanos'.

"According to the announcement of the coast guard, the big wave swept away two bathers, who were injured," they added.

"At the same time, deckchairs were swept away, as well as personal belongings of the people who bathed on the beach.

"When the ship docked at the port of Rafina, officers of the Rafina Port Authority arrested the master of FAST FERRIES ANDROS' for violation of articles 291 par. 3 'Dangerous interference with the transport of means of fixed orbit, ships and aircraft' and 314 'Physical injury due to negligence' by P.K..

"A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Mykonos Port Authority."
