Emma Heming Willis recalls meeting husband Bruce while engaged to someone else
Emma Heming Willis has spoken out about her first meeting with husband Bruce Willis.
Emma, who recently turned 50, and Bruce went public with their relationship in early 2008 and tied the knot the following year.
However, they actually met years before when Emma was engaged to someone else and she’s recently spoken out about their first interactions and how charmed she was by the Hollywood star.
Speaking on the Making Space podcast this week, she said: “I met him in like 2005, I want to say, and we met at the gym, like most people in Hollywood do, I guess.

“His time was before mine and we would sort of overlap, and the things I remember about him was just how warm and charismatic, how funny he was, but he always really took the time to want to learn more about me.
"Just more about who I was, about my life, and prior to that I had never really thought about Bruce Willis.”
She went on to explain that she grew up watching her husband-to-be in 1980s TV series Moonlighting but said she hadn’t seen much of his movie work as she was ‘never really an action movie fan’.
She continued: “So when I had noticed him, I had said to my mother ‘I met Bruce Willis, and he’s really a lovely man.’ And my mom was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re engaged to be married.’ I said, ‘No, no, no.’ Yes, at the time, I was engaged to be married, but I had met him and I just noticed that.”
However despite feeling a spark, Emma says nothing happened until years later when her relationship had broken down.
“It wasn’t until years later, after my engagement fizzled, thankfully, that we went on our first date, and I just really loved being around him,” Emma said. “There was just something very warm, safe and fun. My husband is just so full of life, and it was a really beautiful time. It was a really great time in our lives.”
According to a 2025 article in Variety, it was a slightly different story for Bruce who knew she was the one from the start, and reportedly told his pal and personal trainer Stephen Eads that he would marry Emma not long after they first met.
The couple have been wed for almost two decades and share two daughters together.
Elsewhere in the podcast, she revealed the ‘guilt’ she felt for celebrating her 50th birthday party.
The Die Hard star announced his retirement from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, which has since developed into frontotemporal dementia (FTD), an incurable neurodegenerative disease which impacts behaviour, personality and language.
In late 2025, Emma and his family made the decision to move him into a care home to help accommodate his needs.
Speaking on the podcast she admitted that she had ‘not really been in the celebratory feelings’ as her birthday approached.
"I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything,"she said.
"But I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, 'You know what? You don’t wanna miss out on your 50th. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion.' And I really sat with that, and I thought about it. And I thought, 'You know what? I don’t wanna look back and think, why didn’t I celebrate 50?'"
