Protesters took to the streets of Washing DC during Donald Trump's inauguration, leading to violent outburst and criminal damage.

Around 230 rioters were arrested and will be charged with felony rioting, federal prosecutors announced yesterday; the charge can result in a maximum of 10 years in jail and a $25,000 (£20,193) fine.

Violent protesters smashed shop fronts, threw bricks at police and set fire to cars during the anti-Trump demonstrations, leading to the police using tear gas to break up the crowds. At least six police officers were injured in the riots.

Many of those arrested appeared in court yesterday, WUSA 9 reports, and most will be released without bail and will return to court next month.

It all began kicking off about an hour before Trump took the oath and continued into the night as over 1000 protesters, some wearing masks, burst onto the streets, leaving it like a war-zone.

Luis Villlarroe, the Olympic diver, was left with cuts to his hand after protesters attacked his limo.

A number of them carried crowbars and hammers. Further arrests were made for acts of vandalism and destruction of property.

A limousine was covered in spray paint before being set alight; elsewhere a Starbucks was smashed up.

Groups upset about Trump's attitude towards climate change, race, women's rights, immigration and drugs were amongst those rioting during the inauguration. As fell as those that wanted to just smash shit up, of course, which, let's face it, was probably a sizeable chunk.
