If 2016 has taught me anything it's that people are very willing to part with large sums of cash for £5 notes.

Usually these stories fill me with bitter rage, as I'm scouring every new fiver I get for a 'special' serial number, but this one is actually quite cool.

A grandmother, who was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer, found herself in possession of a rare new note and has sold it for £1,699. With that money, she's planning on using the money to treat her family to a dream Christmas.

Gail Meikle, 51, told the Liverpool Echo she only checked out the serial number after a taxi driver told her some were trading hands for thousands of pounds. She checked her notes and found that one had a small misprint.

On her eBay post she wrote: "Very rare £5 note, printing error just below queen's head, a line of 5's below line and other out of line, AK09. Excellent condition, passed two hands, no marks, slight soft crease only but very good condition."

She told the paper finding the ticket was going to help end her 2016 on a high after a 'tough year' which saw her diagnosed with cancer, undergoing an operation and finally being given the all-clear.

She said: "It reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the golden ticket!"

Good luck to her. And, it's early but... have a merry Christmas too!
