The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a military installation and nuclear bunker located in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. Not much is known about it by civilians as - naturally - being a secretive nuclear bunker much of the info around it is classified.

With that said there have been some pretty interesting documentaries made about the place, including this one...

The underground command centre monitors North American air space, as well as missile threats. Apparently it's the "brain stem" of the country's "nervous system" when it comes to strategic defense.

The complex was built under 2,000 feet (610 m) of granite on two hectares (five acres).

Fifteen three-story buildings are protected from movement by an earthquake or explosion by a system of giant springs that the buildings sit on, and flexible pipe connectors to limit the operational effect of movement.

According to Native American legend, Colorado's Cheyenne Mountain is a sleeping dragon that many years ago saved the Ute Mountain Tribe.

The legend claims that the Great Spirit punished the people by sending a massive flood, but after they repented, it sent a dragon to drink the water. The dragon fell asleep after downing too much H20, was petrified and then became the mountain.

Since being declared fully operational in April 1966, the installation has played a vital role in the Department of Defense - proving it's own sort of dragon.

In fact, if the world is ever plunged into nuclear Armageddon, no doubt this place will play a role.

The closest to us Brits is the Isle of Lewis, the only downside is it would mean living in Scotland, so really it's up to you to decide whether it's worth moving there, or if you'd rather accept the inevitability of irradiated death. At least there'll be a huge piss up.
