Sony looks to have filed a patent for a new cartridge, prompting all kinds of speculation about what it could be for.

A newly filed patent has been registered in Brazil for the mysterious cartridge, showing a design drawing of how it might look. Senior art director Yujin Morisawa is named in connection with the design - he has worked on all manner of products for the Japanese company over the years.

Dutch site LetsGoDigital, which has previously shared a bunch of PS5 leaks, shared the patent, explaining that it is titled 'configuration applied to/in data recording and storage equipment', which means f*** all to me.

But it then goes on to add: "The application is internationally categorised as Class 14.99, with the description 'Miscellaneous', or 'Miscellaneous'. In Japan, however, this classification is described as 'Electronic game accessories'."

Naturally, you guys don't need me to tell you that the various iterations of the Sony PlayStation have never required cartridges, meaning owners have never known the satisfaction that comes from blowing on a cartridge that isn't working before reinserting and finding it plays perfectly.

Anyway, I digress. The lack of cartridges in the past has got folks wondering what this could be for. It's unlikely to be for the upcoming PS5, for the aforementioned reasons, so could it be for a brand-new console? Or perhaps handheld console?

Sony

The ill-fated PlayStation Vita used cartridges when it was released back in 2012, so now some believe the company could be giving handhelds another shot.

In the past, Sony hasn't had much success with handheld products, however, fans reckon it could be poised to launch a new one to try and muscle in on the market following the success of Nintendo's Switch.

But before you get too excited, Sony has repeatedly said it doesn't have plans for a new handheld. Still, maybe the company is just keeping its cards close to its chest.

For now, it's all speculation and we'll have to wait and see what the gaming giant has in store. But that certainly isn't going to be enough to stop some people from searching for international patents to try and get the jump on Sony.
