Sony confirms PS5 is entering ‘the latter stage of its life cycle’

Did someone say PS6?

It feels like not too long ago that Sony released the PlayStation 5.

But four years on from its launch, and the company has said the console is entering into 'the latter stage of its life cycle'.

When the PS5 was first released during the height of the covid pandemic, the console literally sold out in minutes.

In fact, it was so in demand that people were auctioning them off online for thousands of pounds.

Others were even calling in sick on the PS5 launch day so they could spend hours and hours with their precious devices.

But a few years on and it seems the hype is kind of over. In fact, people are now starting to utter the words *PS6*.

Sony had initially set a target to sell 25 million consoles during the current financial year, but has had to tone down the forecast to 21 million due to a drop in sales.

In fact, senior vice president at Sony, Naomi Matsuoka, has said that the company expects the price of the device to start falling over the next year.

“Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle,” Matsuoka told Bloomberg.

“As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales. For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year.”

Naturally, thoughts are beginning to turn to what could come next, and the possibility of a PS6.

One person wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "They talking about the PS6 already lmaoooo I haven’t even bought the 5 yet."

While another said: "This means PS6 is in the works."

And a third added: "Are they saying in the next 3-5 years we will get a PS6 already? Still feels new to me the PS5."

Meanwhile a fourth commented: "Sony saying the ps5 is entering the latter half of its life cycle and looking towards the ps6 is crazy because most people don't even have one still."

People are also trying to estimate when the PS6 might arrive, with one theorising: "I think we're honestly looking at 2027/28 still. If it moves up, then 2027 for sure. But it's so hard to think any sooner for PS6."

And another added: "PS6 2028 every 8 years it’s a new one it seems."
