An Amazon delivery driver has explained just how much they get paid each day, regardless of how many deliveries they complete.
Alex has a couple of gigs to his name, also coaching football and working as a mechanic alongside the driving. And he documents much of it on TikTok.
With Amazon being a service so many of us use every day (come on, I know you were up last night ordering random objects or binge-watching Clarkson’s Farm), it’s easy to forget there’s a whole world of workers linked to it.
I mean, some of us may be on a first name basis with our local driver, OK, I am anyway, but you might never have stopped to ponder how much cash they’re making from delivering your impulse buys.
Alex works as a delivery driver for Amazon (TikTok/alexthemech) But Alex shared a video to give a ‘quick explanation’ of the pay, outlining the base amount of money he gets regardless of how many parcels he hands over to customers.
On a day that was ‘not bad’, he’d made ‘only’ 100 stops in a town in Wales, a nice and quick shift.
“So we are on a set standard pay each day, or should I say, per route,” he explained. “So it’s £150 per day for a normal van or £165 for a long wheelbase van.”
The bloke owns his own van so uses it to do his rounds.
Alex said that doesn’t matter if the driver has 70 or 170 stops, ‘that pay doesn’t change’.
“We get 19p per mile fuel back - we have to pay our own fuel, and then we get it back two weeks later from Amazon,” he explained.
“You have some drivers that are relatively slow, take it nice and easy, they may have 70 stops a day.
“And you’ve got drivers that are quick, that’ll have 140 stops, but the pay stays the same.”
One user was shocked by how little Alex gets for fuel as they said it’s ‘far too low’ and must be costing him ‘out of pocket’.
“I usually lose about £5 per day in my van but other drivers who have smaller 1.6 diesel vans make a couple of ££ each day,” he wrote back.
Alex also added that he does need to deliver all the packages in a day, unless there are issues and he can’t choose how many stops to do a day.
Although if he wants to pick up extra, he could split a shift with someone to help them out and get some extra cash.
