Brits given urgent warning over dog toy that can cause 'werewolf syndrome'

The dog chews can cause serious symptoms in pets

Brits have been given an urgent warning over a dog toy that can cause ‘werewolf syndrome’.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said the certain brands of chew bones can cause sudden and serious behavioural changes.

This advice against giving dogs the specific China-made products follows concerns from the European Union (EU). Listing chews from Barkoo and Chrisco, reports suggest they are linked to dogs experiencing this ‘werewolf syndrome’.

And it’s much more serious than dogs howling at the moon, as symptoms include include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits, and in some cases, death.

Thankfully, there isn’t necessarily a confirmed distribution of affected products or a detection of cases in the UK.

However, Tina Potter, Head of Incidents at FSA, warns: “There is the possibility that some consumers may have purchased these online from international sellers.”

She added: “No unsafe dog chews have been identified but, based on international investigations so far, we are advising dog owners to avoid feeding the affected chews to dogs as a precaution. There is no evidence to suggest these products present any risk to human health.”

The current advice for dog owners is that if you have fed the affected chews to your dog, then ‘stop doing so immediately’.

“If your dog is unwell and has been fed any of the dog chews listed, you should seek veterinary advice and provide detailed information to the vet about the foods and treats your dog has been fed,” the FSA added.

Vets have also been warned to be alert to these ‘werewolf syndrome’ symptoms in dogs brought in.

If they suspect cases associated with dog chews, vets can report them through the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) Small Animal Surveillance.

The FSA added that it has been liaising with authorities in affected EU countries to get more understanding of the problem.

LADbible has contacted Barkoo for comment.

Chrisco told LADBible: "We are still working on finding the reason why our product is suspected of causing these reactions. No test results have given us the answer yet.

"We also are not selling to UK so the products should not be found on this market."
