Lawyer says there is one question you should ‘never answer’ if you are pulled over by police

Here's what you should and shouldn't say

A lawyer has revealed the one question you should never answer if you find yourself being pulled over by the police.

When driving, it would understandably be nerve-racking to see flashing blue lights in your rear-view mirror and realise that you're being pulled over by the police.

Especially if you've never been in this situation before, as you may not know how to act or what your rights are.

Thankfully for us, legal content creators such as UK-based lawyer @tiktokstreetlawyer on TikTok have built followings by making sure Brits are aware of their legal rights in day-to-day scenarios.

In one viral video, the content creator revealed the one question you should think twice before answering.

And no, it's nothing to do with drinking or having illegal substances in your vehicle.

"Here's a question you should never answer in a million years without knowing the suspected offence you are accused of," he explains at the start of the clip.

"It's the one where you get stopped by police in your car and the officer asks you: 'Do you know why I pulled you over?'"

Now, this question definitely appears to be an innocent one, and you may be thinking that cooperating may speed up the process and lead to less trouble. For example, if you're driving with a broken taillight, you might think it's easier to admit, apologise and hope for the minimum fine.

However, this content creator urges people not to blurt out what they believe an officer would want to hear without being a 'Jedi mind reader'.

"You don't know exactly what's going through the officer's mind, right," he continues.

"So why are you talking without information from the officer?"

He goes on to explain the question could very well be a trick question designed to 'catch drivers off guard before they realise they are not legally required to answer this question'.

"Imagine it's not a trick question and without knowing the offence you were accused of you answer: 'Because I ran a red light. Because I was speeding. Because I was eating a kebab. Because I am the Muffin Man'," he continued.

"You've just admitted to four criminal offences when the officer was only thinking and maybe only had evidence about one offence - assuming they had any offence in mind in the first place.

"They can be used against you in a court of law."

So what should you say if you're caught in this situation? That would be a simple 'Officer, please tell me'.

Once the officer explains why you've been pulled over, you're able to make a decision whether or not you want to talk about it.

"Admitting to a minor road traffic violation might avoid court altogether and you might get some safety advice too," he concluded.

"Answering police questions based on ignorance and speculation increases the risk of you going to court and you having to plead guilty to being the Muffin Man."
