Photo of woman's hair blocking television on seven-hour flight divides opinion

The photo showing a woman's long hair blocking the TV screen behind sent Twitter into a traditionally measured debate

A man has divided opinion online after sharing a picture of a woman’s hair blocking the telly in the back of his seat on a seven-hour flight.

Adam Butler, a Londoner who was travelling from Montreal in Canada on Tuesday, was left with little entertainment on show after the woman’s long and curly locks became draped over the back of her chair, right in front of his television.

In case you were worried, he did ask her to move her hair and she duly obliged, but not before he’d taken a picture and sparked off a whole debate on Twitter.

The 57-year-old decided that he had to take action because of the hair – which you have to admit is very nice – blocking his view because otherwise he’d have been on the seven-hour flight with no dreadful film to watch.

Right before he acted, he took a picture and asked the internet what he should do about it.

Obviously, he was inundated with totally normal and sensible suggestions, including trapping the poor woman’s hair in his tray table and then waiting for her to get up.

Here's the picture that started it all.

That’s a solution that wouldn’t have made anyone happy, right?

Hundreds of people got in touch, with one person stating: "I feel for the girl, it's a struggle to have long, thick, curly hair in general, worse on a flight."

Oh aye, it must be horrible for her…

Another person disagreed with that, writing: "Are you kidding me? I have thick curly hair, wore it long for most of my life and have never felt the need or been rude and selfish enough to do this."

Just to clarify, she did move the hair in the end, she wasn’t rude or selfish.

Amongst the more ‘out-there’ suggestions was this gem: "Had this on a long-haul flight a few months back. Trapping it in the tray works well."

Then there were the jokes.

One person said: "Tell Mick Hucknall to be more considerate to others."

Very good.

Imagine if it was the Simply Red singer though, that would add another dimension altogether to the story.

Someone else chimed in: "I’ve a bit of a phobia about other people’s hair,

“I’d have to ask them to move it."

We can pretty well all agree that just asking them to move it is the sensible option.

Let’s not split hairs, eh?

As we’ve pointed out though, the whole thing had a peaceful and swift resolution.

Adam Butler just did the normal thing and asked the woman to move it, to which she obliged.

Adam explained: "It was a flight Montreal-London on the 22nd November with my wife, after a brief trip to see her parents in Canada.

"A girl with voluminous curly hair sat down in the seat directly in front of me. To make herself comfortable, she flicked her hair up, as she was settling into her seat.

"Perhaps she didn’t notice, but half of her hair ended up falling over the top of the chair, to cover much of my media screen on the back of her chair.

"She wasn’t overtly tall, her head was not above the top of her seat, but her hair was very, very long!

"I asked her politely if she could move her hair as it was covering my screen.

"She answered very politely and graciously and immediately did so, tying it in a big bun on top of her head.

"Luckily, it didn’t fall over again throughout the entire seven-hour flight!

"I took the picture as it was so ridiculous that this should happen, as to be funny, and tweeted it before taking off.

"I was astonished at the huge number of likes, comments and re-tweets it had attracted by the time I switched on my phone the next morning upon touching down in London."

"Many others clearly found it ridiculous and funny too, with dozens offering suggestions of what I should do - which ranged from the funny to the outrageous."

All’s well that ends well, then.
