Are you completely perplexed by the temperature of your significant other's shower?

While you may enjoy a relatively warm rinse off after a long day, your partner may prefer a temperature similar to that which would welcome you through the gates of hell.

It's very weird indeed, but the good news is that you're not alone in this - as we know thanks to the blessing/curse that is social media.

It's the latest trend, with the viral tag being 'wife vs husband shower temperature' on the relevant platforms, particularly having a stranglehold over users on TikTok.

The majority of these videos involve men complaining about the scorching hot temperatures that their wives and partners prefer to shower in, so much so that they can't do the romantic thing and join them under the water.

One user named Micah made one of the most popular videos under the trend, garnering over 2.9 million likes on the social media app, and spoke about his wife Sarah, and her love for 'boiling' water.

"This is why my wife and I can't shower together...this is boiling hot - hottest it can go," Micah begins to explain, showing the shower controls.

As he reduces it slowly, he says that she's comfortable with 'thirty degree burns', adding: "Her temperature, boiling a turkey."

Believe it or not though, there is a scientific explanation behind all of this, so we can all stop wondering.

Dr Sermed Mezher is a London-based medic, and he says that woman are more likely to experience cold sensitivity, though this tolerance can fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle.

He took to his Instagram page @drsermedmehzer, explaining: "If you're a woman who likes to crank up the shower heating bill, then you're not alone and there's a reason for it.

"See, women naturally have a fractionally higher core body temperature compared to men which helps to keep those inner organs toasty, but can lead to cold sensitivity than can worsen throughout the cycle," he revealed.

Apparently, a woman's temperature sensitivity reaches its peak during ovulation and towards the end of menstruation, all because of the rise in the hormone oestrogen, which is proven to lower body temperature, also reducing blood flow to your most sensitive body parts, your hands and feet.

The doctor further identified that Oestrogen is a 'key hormone' when it comes to the female reproductive system, affecting blood circulation and blood properties.

He added: "One of these effects includes thickening the blood, which can complicate its flow, particularly to small capillaries in extremities like the hands and feet."

As well as this, women on average have between six and 11% more body fat compared to men, who have more skeletal muscle - the muscle is known as a 'thermogenic organ', as it produces heat.

This is why men get the perk of feeling warmer, generally. So there you have it.
