The idea of sealing up a jar of rain water and mud will sound a lot less disturbing once you find out what happened.

Taking to YouTube channel HabitatForge, a man reveals how the results of his very unique experiment completely 'blew me away'.

“Couple weeks ago, I set up this jar using nothing but water and mud from a rain puddle. That's it. Nothing more added,” he explained.

At first, the jar appeared lifeless, filled with cloudy brown water.

Curious to see what might happen though, he sealed the container and left it untouched for another two weeks.

What had once looked like muddy water was now an ecosystem packed with life, predators and microscopic organisms.

He said: “This jar isn't just alive. It's packed with insects, bizarre little creatures, all doing things that seem almost unreal.”

Once the water cleared up after the fifteenth day, the content creator realised what had been living there all along.

“The water stayed completely opaque for days. It wasn't until around day 15 that it finally cleared enough to show what had been hiding inside,” he added.

“Everywhere you look, microorganisms are swimming. Literally thousands of them.”

Among the most striking inhabitants were diving beetles, which hunt underwater using an ingenious breathing method.

“See that bubble at the tip of its abdomen? That's its air tank. It surfaces for a quick gulp of air, traps it under its wing covers, and carries that bubble down so it can breathe while it hunts,” he explained.

The tiny ecosystem also contained countless crustaceans and microscopic animals. “The most common by far are copods. These little crustaceans are basically the foundation of the whole food web,” the YouTuber said.

Even smaller creatures were present in huge numbers: “Those are rotifers… They're microscopic.”

Larger organisms including worms were seen tunneling through the mud and larvae, waiting to transform into mosquitoes.

But life inside the jar was not peaceful. “In every ecosystem on Earth, animals eat other animals. And at the top, there's always a top predator,” he said.

In this case, a larva dominated the jar, attacking anything that moved.

“Anything that moves in front of it can become food,” he added. “Those jaws don't just grab. They inject venom that paralyzes the victim.”

Despite unexpected violence, the jar functioned as a relatively balanced ecosystem, as the man observed: “This little jar is a world of its own. Thousands of living things interacting, each filling a role.

“The craziest part is where it all came from. A simple rain puddle in a parking lot.”
