Hollington Drive is the latest drama to get everybody talking and viewers want to know if the chilling new series is based on a true story.

The new thriller from ITV is centred around two sisters, Theresa, (Line of Duty's Anna Maxwell Martin) and her older headteacher sibling, Helen (Rachael Stirling), who are close to one another and are the social pillars in this seemingly sleepy suburb. But as the series develops, we learn they've got demons of their own.

Hollington Drive plot summary

The drama opens on a warm summer's night in Hollington Drive, which is a fictional place filmed in Wales. Theresa, Helen and their families are enjoying a barbecue, which we later realise is the calm before the storm.

Theresa and Helen's 10-year-old children, Ben and Eva (who you may recognise from a Netflix series), ask to go and play in the nearby park, much to the anxiety of some of the adults, Theresa included. When they don't return home on time, Theresa goes in search of the kids and finds them fighting on the edge of a woodland area.

Her instincts tell her something terrible must have happened and shortly after, it's reported that local boy, 10-year-old Alex Boyd, has gone missing and a police investigation is launched.

Over the series, Theresa begins to notice that her son becomes increasingly withdrawn with a darkening mood and she worries that a past traumatic event is finally catching up on them. As new details of the investigation are announced, she becomes terrified that her son may have something to do with Alex's disappearance.

The drama is divided into four 60-minute episodes which air on Wednesday evenings at 9pm. The first episode was released on 29th September and is available to stream on ITV Hub.

Is Hollington Drive based on a true story?

Although there's no doubt that cases like this have happened in policing history, Hollington Drive is not believed to be based on a true story.

The drama series was produced by West Road Pictures, and written by British screenwriter Sophie Petzal (Blood, Wolfblood).

Hollington Drive cast

Alongside Anna Maxwell Martin and Rachael Stirling, the drama stars Rhashan Stone (Finding Alice) as Theresa's partner Fraser, and Peter McDonald (Dublin Murders) plays Helen's partner David.

Theresa's 10-year-old son, Ben, is played by Fraser Holmes and Helen's daughter, Eva, is played by Amelie Bea Smith.

There's also Fraser's brother Eddie, who's played by Ken Nwosu, Jonas Armstrong as Gareth, Jodie McNee as Jean, and Tia May Watts as Georgina.
