The long wait for the Avatar sequel is finally over.

Set a decade after events in the 2009 blockbuster hit Avatar, the latest sci-fi thriller features some unexpected returners and star debuts.

James Cameron is back in the director’s chair for the sequel, and here’s what we know so far about Avatar’s return.

Who is in the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water?

Cameron has once again assembled an all-star crew on Pandora for the long-awaited film.

Fan favourites Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) are back, and we can expect Avatar debuts from Titanic star Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Vin Diesel.

Meanwhile sci-fi veteran Stephen Lang returns as villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch - despite the character’s death in the first movie.

Another resurrection of sorts is Sigourney Weaver’s character, Dr Grace Augustine who also died in the first film, and fans are clamouring to know how she can return in the sequel.

Here’s the highlights of the star-studded cast:

  • Sam Worthington as Jake Sully
  • Zoe Saldana as Neytiri
  • Michelle Yeoh as Dr Karina Mogue
  • Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch
  • Sigourney Weaver in an undisclosed role
  • Kate Winslet as Ronal
  • Oona Chaplin as Varang
  • Jemaine Clement as Dr Ian Garvin

Avatar: The Way of Water trailer:

Fans have been teased with the release of one 90-second trailer for the Avatar sequel.

The trailer gives us plenty of hints about the new film: Stephen Lang is back, the film is set in Pandora’s oceans, and there is a possible return of Earth’s Resource Development Administration mining for the coveted unobtanium.

When is Avatar: The Way of Water coming out?

It has been 13 long years since the first Avatar film, but Disney’s 20th Century Studios have finally confirmed a release date of 16 December 2022 for the sequel.

Avatar’s creators say that the next film, Avatar 3, is also nearly complete and will come out on 20 December 2024.

And we just can’t get enough of the Na’vi’s adventures: James Cameron says there will be five Avatar films in total, the last one coming out in December 2028.

Although The Way of Water was pushed back from December 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are reassured that the new date is set in stone.

Now the pandemic is over, we can relish in the adventures of another planet again…
