Catherine Zeta-Jones believes she was born to play a female version of James Bond

She always dreamed of stepping into the well-worn shoes of the world's best known movie spy.

Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed she was desperate to play a female version of James Bond.

This thirst to portray 007 is so big that she even calls the role 'the one that got away'.

The Welsh actor told The Telegraph that, even after all these years, she would absolutely leap at the chance to play the cinema's most famous spy.

"I had the chops to be a female Bond,'' the Oscar-winning star said to the UK newspaper.

"For many years I was Bond material. Actually, I used to dream of being a female spy when I was a kid - if I didn’t make it as an actress."

Well, talk about another impressive career goal.

She went on to add that, as an adult, she had hoped to combine both professional dreams into one.

"Then, later, I had big aspirations [to do both]," she said.

"And this was before there was even a female Doctor Who."

But, alas, Zeta-Jones never had the chance to get suited up in the traditionally male role of Bond.

She did become an investigator/spy in Entrapment, though, so let's count that as a win.

When Zeta-Jones was really big, it was still too early for women in film to take on the 007 gig without blowing the minds of fans, critics, and overzealous neckbearded movie buffs everywhere, so the opportunity passed.

Or so she thinks, anyway.

Eon Productions, the studio responsible for bringing 007 to life, unfortunately revealed they have some pretty stringent requirements for future Bonds.

And those stipulations unfortunately rule Zeta-Jones out.

Michael J Wilson, who heads up alongside producer Barbara Broccoli, revealed the age of the actor who will play the next Bond is crucial.

He said (as reported by Deadline): "Remember, Bond's already a veteran, he's had some experience.

"He's a person who has been through the wars, so to speak.

"He's probably been in the SAS or something, he isn't some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off - that's why it works for a 30-something."

Zeta-Jones is 53 nowadays, so it looks like she's missed the boat.

That doesn't matter, though. She's fairly busy right now.

Netflix has just dropped Tim Burton’s live action Addams Family series Wednesday, in which she plays the iconic and chic matriarch Morticia Addams.

In December, she'll pop on our screens again (as if we could get enough of her, anyway) in Disney's National Treasure: Edge of History, a TV spin-off of the hit Nicolas Cage movies for the streaming service.

But, even though she has a lot on her plate, Zeta-Jones teased that if she got the call up to play Bond, she'd still say yes.

"Oh, it would absolutely be a yes," she teased. "No question."

So, Eon Productions, it looks like the ball is now in your court.
