Courteney Cox opened up about the time her husband-to-be broke up with her during relationship therapy, after saying she ‘doesn’t like’ surprises.
Something tells us there’s really something wrong with a relationship when you end up parting ways just one minute into couples therapy…
But this is the devastating ‘surprise’ that Cox endured, after her partner, Johnny McDaid, made the decision to end their romance a few years after they had begun dating.
Featuring as a guest on the ‘Minnie Questions’ podcast, hosted by Minnie Driver, she recalled the ‘intense’ moment.

She said: “We broke up, and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy.
“I didn’t know it was coming. Whether I should have or not... we went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries, what we could and couldn’t accept about each other.
“Instead, he just broke up within the first minute.”
Courtney said that she felt ‘so much pain’, and was ‘so shocked’ by his huge impromptu decision.
She continued: “I also don’t like surprises.
“And he’s an incredible human being, so he wasn’t trying to surprise me. He was in that much pain in the relationship.
“There was that much that needed to be dealt with, that he had to protect himself around his heart.”
The couple began dating in 2013, and had announced their engagement the following year.
In 2015, after the bombshell decision, they shared that the engagement had been called off, despite rekindling their romance again in 2016.
These two really have been on a rollercoaster journey!
Looking back on the shock break up, Courtney said she was actually so ‘thankful’ that it happened, as it changed their relationship for the better.
She said: “When we got back together, it was a different relationship.”
In September 2023, the pair shared an update on their relationship, announcing that they had been celebrating ten years of their love.
She also added in the post, which was a carousel of loved-up images of herself and the Snow Patrol musician, that Ed Sheeran had introduced the pair to each other!
Courtney celebrated her beau’s birthday in July last year, by sharing on Instagram an edited photo of the guitarist that made him look significantly older, with grey hair.
She wrote: “Happy birthday my sweetheart.
“Good to know that when you’re older… you’ll actually look older than me.”
