Katy Perry explained why she was participating in a legal battle with Carl Westcott, who she had previously bought a house from.
Back in 2020, Perry and her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom, bought a $15 million home in California from Wescott, who signed on the dotted lines with Perry's business manager Bernie Gudvi.
However, days after the deal was completed Wescott attempted to back out of it, claiming he was 'not of sound mind' when he sold the house.
Westcott, who is a business owner and the father-in-law of Real Housewives of Dallas star Kameron Westcott, was diagnosed with the genetic brain disorder Huntington's Disease in 2015.

His attorney, Andrew Thomas, claimed that Westcott was suffering from 'delusion' and 'intrusive thoughts' due to taking painkillers after spinal surgery, alleging that Westcott felt 'mentally clear' a few days later and told Gudvi he was 'not of sound mind' to be signing contracts.

As such, a legal battle between the Westcott family and Gudvi started and the singer was drawn into the midst of it.
Perry and Bloom had intended to use the Montecito mansion as their family home, but according to People, she only officially became the owner of the house last year.
A judge ruled that Westcott had not shown 'persuasive evidence' that he was not of sound mind when he agreed a deal with Gudvi, and it was ruled that he appeared to be 'coherent, engaged, lucid and rational' when he made the deal.

Following the result, both parties filed for damages with a hearing taking place in August this year, during which time Perry testified over Zoom and attorneys for Westcott asked her if she would 'gain money or anything else from the outcome of this litigation'.
Perry had replied 'justice', adding that: "I stand to lose money if it does not work in my favour."

As part of the filing for damages $5 million was sought due to lost rental value and money spent on 'necessary repairs', with a judge recently awarding Gudvi around $3 million, but after deducting Gudvi's retained capital and Westcott's lost interest the final total will be $1.8 million.
A hearing at which the judgement can be challenged is scheduled for 30 December, with Gudvi expected to appear.
