Spanish police issue update after Wayne Lineker 'knocked out cold' by punch in Ibiza

Wayne Lineker said he was 'just trying to protect a girl from being harassed'

Spanish police have issued an update following an incident which saw nightclub owner Wayne Lineker 'knocked out cold' by a punch.

The beach club owner and brother of footballing legend Gary Lineker left people concerned after footage emerged of him being punched to the ground during an argument in Eden Bar, San Antonio, Ibiza in the early hours of Wednesday (12 June).

In the clip Lineker, 62, could be seen arguing with a group of men when one of them threw a punch and knocked him unconscious.

Lineker fell to the ground, narrowly avoiding cracking his head against a solid barrier that was behind him, while people could be heard starting a WWE-style count as he lay on the ground.

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Lineker was unconscious for around six minutes.

Spanish Police have now issued an update on the situation, revealing that Lineker has yet to press charges over the assault.

Police on the island revealed they had responded to the call out but confirmed that Lineker had already left by the time they arrived on scene.

Local police sources, whose officers are employed by San Antonio Town Hall, said: “We went to the scene but the assault victim was no longer there.

"No-one has yet filed a formal complaint."

Meanwhile, The Civil Guard - the other police force covering San Antonio - added that they hadn't received a record of the incident.

Lineker has since given his version of events from the night, revealing that he had been attacked after protecting a female friend.

"I wanted to write this post to let everyone know that I’m doing ok… I have a few stitches and a swollen lip. It could have been much worse so I count myself very fortunate I wasn’t standing 2 yards further back, as my head would have impacted the wall," he wrote in a post on Instagram.

"Obviously the video is very disturbing to see especially for my family. The papers were very accurate and it was a simple case of me just trying to protect a girl from being harassed."

Lineker went on to thank his followers for their kind messages and well wishes, concluding the post with: "Thank you everyone for all your messages of concern the support has been really overwhelming."

Lineker's words correspond with statements from witnesses from the night, who said that an argument had started between Lineker and the men after they had seen a female friend of his, who was said to be in her 20s.
