One of the many prophecies made by Nostradamus could happen pretty soon if the warnings of Anthropic's CEO are anything to go by.
The AI company boss behind the large language model Claude has been calling for a slowdown in artificial intelligence development as he issued a warning.
Dario Amodei said the massively increased pace of AI improvement and recent incidents of cybersecurity attacks have him concerned that AI is running well ahead of attempts to safeguard against it being used recklessly.
He's warned that at the current rate of progress it could be between six and 12 months before AI bots start taking over the internet as they're getting more advanced and more dangerous.

If this is how humanity screws itself into oblivion then one person who can feel smug from beyond the grave is French prediction-machine Nostradamus, the man who left behind a lot of vague warnings which subsequent generations have managed to adapt to the catastrophes of their time.

One of his many prophecies has been interpreted as suggesting that AI will make a bid for world domination quite soon, and if the internet being hijacked by an AI bot swarm is at most a year away then he'll have been bang on the money.
Of course we'll all be a bit too dead to give Nostradamus his flowers for that, assuming AI data centres haven't drunk all the water and all the flowers haven't died out as a result.
There are plenty of warnings out there about what AI will do to us if we don't stop it, including the end of the human race being suggested as a possible outcome.
AI has certainly come along a lot recently, just a few years ago it was generating obviously fake content but it has been learning a lot since then and now it takes a lot more effort to determine the real from the fake.
There's danger in failing to spot a fake, and with so much AI content being put out it risks the real being mistaken and ignored as well.

Even if human extinction isn't where we end up the alarm bells are still ringing about the social and economic impacts AI is having on us right now and what it could do if not stopped.
If things get worse then you can be sure that one of the many oracles and historic predictors like Nostradamus will be credited with having called it right.
He left a long list of predictions which can be made to fit many events, but very often get adapted to have foretold war, death and destruction.
