Tom Holland calls Zendaya 'Maree' on Spider-Man red carpet as he asks heartwarming question

Tom Holland and Zendaya announced just weeks ago that they got secretly married earlier this year.

Or, to be more specific, after a month’s long press tour for a wedding themed movie Zendaya was able to keep it to herself, whilst Tom Holland revealed they were married in his first interview of his first press tour since it happened.

In a new interview clip Tom Holland was shown calling Zendaya a different name and, before you jump to any conclusions, it was not him calling her ‘Zendaya Holland’.

The star has gone viral for calling her ‘Maree’ as part of a heartwarming exchange, with many fans pointing out that it actually is quite instructive of how little fans know about the famously private pair of celebrities and their relationship.

The pair are starring together this year in both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, meaning that fans will have gone from rarely seeing the pair together to seeing them in public together almost non-stop for the next month or so.

Why does Tom Holland call Zendaya ‘Maree’?

This one is quite a simple question with a surprisingly simple answer, this is her lesser known middle name.

Though often known by the singular ‘Zendaya’, her full name is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, with her sharing the name Maree with her mother, Claire Maree Stoermer.

In the clip he is seen asking her about a place they had visited in Rome, Giolitti, calling out ‘Maree’ to get her attention.

Zendaya has spoken about dropping the rest of her name, and it is clearly a more career driven move than what she wants to be referred to as privately.

She told Allure in 2016: “I [dropped my last name because I] just thought it was cool, like Cher or Prince.”

A viral video of the exchange has garnered 3.1 million views and 146,000 likes at the time of writing with the caption: “this is the first time we heard tom call z by her second name, that’s so sweet.”

A second tweet replying to this said: “Everyone is obsessing over this but it honestly just show how much of their actual relationship they keep totally hidden. the internet only gets like 5% of what they're actually like together.”

Why are Zendaya and Tom Holland so private in their relationship?

This is a rare insight into their private life, and whilst a small gesture, really does illustrate that outside of Spider-Man press tours every few years fans see very little of them as a couple.

Speaking to GQ in 2021, Holland said: “I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway. We sort of felt robbed of our privacy."

This referred to the fact that their relationship was revealed by long-lens paparazzi who took a picture of the pair kissing in a car.

In the interview where he confirmed to Esquire that they were married, Holland said: “"Our business can present very stressful situations and it’s really nice to have a bedrock of a relationship that will stand the test of time.

"We can support each other in ways that only we can, because only we understand really what it’s like to live this life, and I think that is such a luxury, because I just don’t understand how I would be able to have anything like that with anyone else.”
