A man took a decade to finish his joke on social media, which has left his followers divided.

Having the perfect punchline can either make or break a joke, with plenty of promising comedy routines being ruined by poorly thought out or badly timed conclusions to what was a promising joke.

How long do you reckon you'd need to come up with the perfect punchline for your jokes, a couple of hours? Days if you were feeling particularly pedantic?

Or maybe the perfect piece of comedy needs an entire 10 years to marinate before being shared with the world.

Well, it does for film director Dave Wiskus anyway.

Way back in in 2014, when X was still known by its previous moniker of Twitter, Wiskus took to the platform to write: "You know what the secret to comedy is?"

Wiskus provided no further context or follow-up to his original tweet at the time, leaving many of his followers to chime in with suggestions of their own or even wonder if he was asking a question rather than making a statement.

But what does make the perfect joke you may be wondering and for the next decade it would seem like Wiskus either wasn't going to tell us or didn't even know himself.

For years we would never know what the secret to comedy is in Wiskus' mind.

That was until last Friday.

On 16 August, exactly 10 years to the day after posting his original tweet, Wiskus decided to revisit his tweet and finally share the punchline.

Turns out, the secret to comedy is *drum roll please* ... Timing.

The post has since gone viral as people on social media reacted to what is probably the longest joke ever told, with most people divided on whether or not the punchline was actually worth the wait.

"You’ve mastered the art of patience, I woulda waited a week at most," one person wrote, while a second added: "Crazy all bro had to not do was not die he really put his faith on the line."

Others were wondering how Wiskus even remembered to follow-up on a tweet he'd made a decade ago, with one person asking if he'd scheduled the follow-up to post in 10 years time.

Another user acknowledged the passage of time by adding: "My daughter just turned 10 a couple weeks ago, she’s barely older than your joke. I love your patience."

So now you know, the secret to comedy is.... I'll tell you later.
