Audiences have been given the first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It's been five years since we last saw Star-Lord and his merry gang of intergalactic pals in a standalone film.

While they've appeared in several Avengers films, it's been ages since we got to see Chris Pratt's character go on his own adventure.

But now they're back, baby, and they look better than ever.

Very little is known about the third instalment to the awesome Marvel franchise.

The official synopsis says: "Peter Quill (Pratt), still reeling from the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), must rally the Guardians of the Galaxy on a mission to defend the universe and protect one of their own."

Sounds like a fairly stock-standard Guardians of the Galaxy movie plot, however the trailer gives us a good insight into what fans can expect.

Looks like we're all set for a planet-hopping, action-packed, dramatic, emotional and unbelievable film.

We get to see some origin stories brewing, as a shot shows us Rocket (Bradley Cooper) as a baby racoon and there could also be a potential love story with an otter.

The visuals look incredible as the Guardians traverse across space.

And, as is expected with this particular franchise, we'll hopefully be getting an absolutely incredible soundtrack.

But, you should prepare to say goodbye to the franchise after the film drops.

Disney/Marvel

Director James Gun has said Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is the ‘end’ for him and the rest of the team.

Speaking on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, he said: "This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians."

He went on: "It's so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be.

"I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story."

This is not the first time Gunn has revealed that the franchise was set to be a trilogy - back in 2017 he said: "It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.

"I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far."

The third instalment will see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Karen Gillan all returning.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for release on May 5 next year.
