Fans of The Big Bang Theory, sit up and pay attention as if you were in a science class, because we have news so big it could result in some kind of cataclysmic event which would cause a huge explosion followed by millions of years of nothingness followed by the birth of various stars, planets, moons and a couple of suns. A large whack, if you will.

We already know that The Big Bang Theory's best character, Sheldon (the one who said funny things, unlike whiney Leonard) has his very own spin-off show in the form of Young Sheldon - and now it has a UK release date.

Warner Bros.

Episode one of Young Sheldon will air on E4, on Thursday 22 February at 8.30pm, and is the creation of Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, who both worked on parent programme The Big Bang Theory. The prequel sequel series has garnered favourable reviews and was already commissioned for a second season earlier this year.

Fans of TBBT will know and love Sheldon Cooper, the socially inept but intellectually advanced theoretical physicist famed for his unwittingly hilarious one-liners ('bazinga', etc) and ability to put his foot in it whilst remaining blithely unaware that he has, indeed, put his foot in in.

The spin-off stars young Iain Armitage as a nine-year-old Sheldon, and sees him joining high school in his hometown of Medford, Texas several years early thanks to a gargantuan intellect.

With a 'once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science', much pressure is placed on young Sheldon's shoulders. Unfortunately, his social skills are even less developed than in his adult years, leading to many an embarrassing and socially awkward moment for the young boy. Sounds like me, but without the intellect.

The show also features Zoe Perry as Sheldon's mom, Mary, a devoutly Christian, overprotective mother, and Lance Barber as Sheldon's dad, the head football coach at Medford High and chalk to Sheldon's cheese.

For those unsure whether to invest some eye-time in Young Sheldon, here is a selection of his adult self's best quotes, which we're sure you'll agree, are top dollar.

"You're afraid of insects and women. Ladybugs must render you catatonic."

"I'm exceedingly smart. I graduated college at fourteen. While my brother was getting an STD, I was getting a Ph.D. Penicillin can't take this away."

"I would have been here sooner but the bus kept stopping for other people to get on it."

So essentially, if the original show's theme tune is anything to go by, it all started with the Big Bang. Except this happens before The Big Bang, so therefore takes place before it all started. Got that? Good. Makes sense, I think.
