Fight Club fans can’t believe they missed major hint to the twist in opening of the film as they say it ‘practically gives it away’

Fight Club's major twist is actually revealed in the first few minutes, if you pay attention

Fight Club probably has the most well-known and iconic plot twist of all time and, almost 30 years on, fans are still finding new hints to it throughout the film.

Fans on Reddit have discovered a massive hint that was put in the opening narration of the film, and it is leaving viewers questioning how on earth they missed it.

The David Fincher thriller from 1999 was a commercial flop when it came out, not even managing to recoup Fox’s marketing budget.

Despite that, DVD sales and the popularisation of the internet has meant that the Brad Pitt and Ed Norton film is now considered a classic that nearly everyone knows the twist.

For those who somehow haven’t seen it – we’re about to break the first rule of Fight Club, by talking about Fight Club (and spoiling the twist in the process).

The film follows Ed Norton as an unnamed protagonist who deals with his dull office life by setting up a violent underground fight club.

This comes shortly after meeting Brad Pitt’s character, Tyler Durden, someone who the film at times focuses on far more than Norton’s protagonist.

The ultimate reveal, however, is that Durden and Norton’s protagonist are one and the same, with Durden basically being a figment of Norton's character's imagination that allows him to express his deepest impulses through this exterior being.

Fight Club is full of hints to this, from them only buying one train ticket to them both sharing the same wounds whenever Norton’s character sustains one.

And recently, some fans have come across one massive hint to the twist, and it’s in the opening narration to the movie.

The moment in question was posted to the subreddit r/MovieDetails, with a link to a clip of Fight Club, shown below.

It features Ed Norton’s narration saying: “If you wake up in a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?”

Just as the final question is asked the camera pans along with Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden, showing the ‘different person’ he was set to make himself into.

In essence, if you really paid attention, you'd know the twist to Fight Club in the opening couple of minutes.

The person who posted it to Reddit said that the beginning of the film heavily foreshadows the twist, adding that it ‘basically gives it away’.

One comment replying to the link said: “Wow, that’s pretty explicit. Can’t believe I missed that.”

If you’re now gripped with a desire to rewatch the film and try spot more signs of the twist, you thankfully can watch it in a number of places.

In the UK Fight Club is available to watch on Prime Video, Disney+, and ITV X, and is available to watch on Disney+ and HBO Max in the US.
