It may have been 34 years since the last Home Alone to feature Macaulay Culkin, and we may have had what feels like a million sequels without him in the years since, but it appears that we are closer than ever to getting Kevin McAllister back in a sequel to the Christmas classic.

Culkin became a worldwide name for his role in the Christopher Columbus directed Christmas film, returning for a sequel alongside Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.

He then proceeded to earn the biggest pay day of any child-star ever for the second film, earning a whopping $4.5 million at just 12-years-old. He retired just two years later at 14, with several Home Alone films subsequently being made with different actors in the lead role.

In the years since the Home Alone star has gone through a lot of ups and downs, disappearing for the limelight for years before returning as the lead of a pizza-themed band The Pizza Underground. In the last few years however Culkin has had somewhat of a career renaissance. This saw him appear in Fallout season two, Running Point alongside his wife Brenda Song, and Zootopia 2, as well as starring in an upcoming documentary titled Macaulay Culkin's Midlife Crisis.

It has now been revealed though that the iconic actor is in talks to return to the role he is best known for, Kevin McAllister.

Matthew Beloni revealed on The Town podcast (per DiscussingFilm) that Disney and Culkin had a meeting about returning to the role of Kevin McAllister, claiming that the company are 'salivating' over the idea of a reboot of the franchise with the actor returning.

This comes less than a year after a pitch from the actor for a possible sequel went viral.

Speaking as part of his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour, the actor said: “I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee.

“I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out.

“[Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”

He then claimed that the 'house was a metaphor for their relationship', with the idea earning the actor plaudits.

With the news that Culkin is actually in talks to return however, the reaction has been more mixed. One fan tweeted: "OH FOR F*CKS SAKE. are there no original thoughts anymore." Another said: "leave it the f*ck alone." Other fans however are simply ecstatic to see Culkin returning to the iconic role he is best known for, with one fan simply saying: "Listen. If Culkin is involved I am seated."

A second fan quoted the news saying: "Would only be up for it if they’re going with Culkin’s original pitch because it actually sounded like a great follow-up to both 1&2."

When previously asked about returning for a sequel to the film, the director of the first two films was pretty adamant - it isn't a good idea.

"I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that," Columbus told Entertainment Tonight. "I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone."

In January this year Canadian actress Catherine O'Hara, who starred as Kevin's mother Kate, died at the age of 71, and Culkin paid tribute to her in an Instagram post writing: "Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later."
