Fans claim Shrek is 'ruined' after seeing design of characters in new sequel trailer featuring Zendaya

The first look at Shrek 5 is here and fans are raging

The first look at Shrek 5 is here and to say it is a disappointing first look is the understatement of the century.

The whole gang is coming back to Never, Never, After, but the characters have all received redesigns, with Zendaya confirmed to be joining the cast alongside a returning Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy.

The teaser was posted to social media and sees the family using the mirror mirror in the wall... as a phone to scroll through TikTok.

Check out the teaser below and see the horrifying redesign of the characters firsthand.

The teaser confirmed the fact that the film will come out in Christmas of 2026.

While Antonio Banderas has recently returned to the character of Puss In Boots in the critically acclaimed Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, he was not confirmed in the teaser to be returning for the fifth film.

The teaser sees the characters, who have been redesigned in a way that takes them much closer to the typical Dreamworks style and fans were less than pleased.

Dreamworks actually turned off comments on the teaser's YouTube release, with fans on social media tearing into the design.

The film has brought back the franchise after 15 years, with Shrek: Forever After being the last entry into the franchise.

One fan replied on Twitter saying: "I feel we will owe Shrek the Third a big ass apology after this."

Another posted a picture of the characters saying: "WHAT THE HELL DID THEY DO TO THEM NO."

Others simply posted pictures of Sonic the Hedgehog, but the version from the first trailers released for the live action film.

The backlash was so violent in the response to Sonic's design that Paramount ended up changing the design.

Despite this, Shrek 5 appears to be full steam ahead, as they return to the world that spawned the now iconic trilogy (and the less talked about fourth film).

The return comes as Cameron Diaz returned to the world of acting after quitting Hollywood for nine years.

She said on her reason for returning to acting in the Netflix film Back In Action: "I thought that if I was going to come back and do a movie, the only person I’d come back and do it with would be this guy (Foxx).

“Seriously. I had other opportunities along the way and I was always saying: ‘No. I’m not doing it, I’ve told you... What? Jamie asked? Jamie? Oh, I can do a movie with Jamie!’”

Now she's coming back as Fiona, Myers is back as Shrek, Eddie Murphy is back as Donkey, and we're all praying that things come out better than this teaser appears to be.

Shrek 5 is releasing in cinemas Christmas 2026.
