Here are all the major changes we currently know are coming in HBO's TV adaptation of Harry Potter.

Yesterday (25 March) saw HBO release its first trailer for the highly anticipated reboot, which sees Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout take over the roles of the golden trio from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the season will consist of eight episodes and cover the events of the first book, which includes Harry being accepted into Hogwarts, making friends with Ron and Hermione and, facing off against Voldemort for the first time.

The two minute trailer introduced (or re-introduced) us several major players from the franchise, including Professor Dumbledore, Professor Snape, Hagrid and of course the deplorable Dursley family.

Take a look at the trailer below if you haven't already seen it:

All the major changes we've noticed in the upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot so far

It doesn't take a superfan to notice there are already several key departures from the books and previous adaptation – and no, we're not talking about the new cast of the fact that this version will see each book chopped up into TV episodes rather than squeezed into a film.

Harry goes to a non-magical school?

A significant portion of the trailer sees McLaughlin's Harry struggling at a muggle school and being bullied by his cousin Dudley.

Harry's pre-Hogwarts education is something which is referenced in the books - the cousins attend the same primary school and the Dursley's intend to send Harry off to a secondary school named Stonewall High - but this is about as much as information as we get.

Meanwhile the first film omits this entirely, instead introducing us to Harry when he's just shy of his 11th birthday.

Harry's life at home with the Dursleys

The boy who lived is once again relegated to the cupboard under the stairs, however we do see new glimpses into his unhappy home life. In one clip Petunia is cutting Harry's hair with a pair of kitchen scissors while telling him: "You think you’re something special? There is nothing special about you."

Petunia, Vernon and Dudley (played by Bel Powley, Daniel Rigby and Amos Kitson) also appear to be less exaggerated in this version.

Harry and Hagrid take the underground

The 2001 Chris Columbus film doesn't go into much detail about how Harry and Hagrid travel around London for their shopping trip to Diagon Alley, likely due to time constraints, however the new trailer shows us a glimpse of the pair hopping on the underground.

One can only imagine the thought of a wizard trying to understand the concept of an Oyster card.

Life at Hogwarts

We can of course expect all the major moments such as the gang's arrival at Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat and Quidditch matches to be included in the new series, however it would appear we will also be seeing more of Hogwarts lessons.

One scene shows students seated around a projector while scratching away notes on parchment, while another provides a glimpse of Professor Sprout's Herbology lessons.

Potions classes will of course be included in the series, with the trailer providing a brief glimpse of Paapa Essiedu's Severus Snape.

When does the Harry Potter TV series air?

There's good news on this front, as the trailer has confirmed the first episode will premiere on Christmas Day 2026, which is sooner than the original 'early 2027' estimates.
