What Is The TikTok Frog Army? Controversy & Potential Disaster

There are some admittedly weird trends that appear on TikTok, but one of the strangest recent obsessions has been with the ‘Frog Army

Earlier this year, TikToker @thinfrog ‘rescued’ 1.4 million frog eggs from a local pond. These eggs have finally hatched, releasing a million baby frogs into his garden. @thinfrog has accumulated 1.9 million followers as people have been fascinated about the results of such an experiment.

In one of his most recent videos, the TikToker explained that there are so many frogs in his garden ‘I don’t think I can walk on the grass anymore,’ and in a later video he shows scenes of his neighbour's houses completely covered with the amphibians. He stated ‘I kinda regret this now, no one can go in the garden…the neighbours are taken over by millions of baby frogs.’ However his regret was short lived as he mentions at the end of the video that his mission has been a success.

Is The Frog Army A Terrible Idea?

Fans of the frog army series have started to turn since the hatching of the eggs, with many of @thinfrog’s followers making comments such as ‘I’m waiting for the court case’, or that ‘kids will be learning of the frog disaster of 2022 in the history text books.’

One user who is not taking the series so lightly is @froggiebiologist. The biologist has complained about the ethics of such a feat, as it is likely to spread disease among the frogs and harm the natural ecosystem. There have also been questions asked about the legality of the frog army as @froggiebiologist mentioned that the RSPCA have ‘discouraged this sort of behaviour,’ and practices like this are not regulated. The biologist has also doubted the legitimacy of @thinfrog, suggesting that many of the Frog Army videos may not actually be his, or that they aren’t from this year.
