Gerard Butler's new flick that has a near-perfect audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is coming to Prime Video this week.

Plane, which stars Butler and Luke Cage's Mike Colter, has scored 94 per cent from audiences on the esteemed movie review website.

Reviewers are also lapping it up, as it's also earned an impressive 77 per cent from critics.

The film follows pilot Brodie Torrance (played by Butler), who saves passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island.

But once they survive the horrific accident, dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, and the only person who can help is Louis Gaspare (Colter), an accused murderer who the FBI was transporting on Torrence's flight.

Sarah Cartland from Caution Spoiler gave the action flick four stars and praised it for its simple plot yet strong execution.

"This is solid and enjoyable filmmaking from director Jean-François Richet, that knows its limits. No overflowing passenger lists of extras, no shoehorned subplots," she wrote.

The Guardian journalist Wendy Ide called it 'an aviation fuel-powered good time' while Eddie Harrison from film-authority.com said it was a 'straight-up, no-nonsense, gritty action flick that delivers plentiful thrills and spills'.

Ahead of the film's release, Butler spoke to Inverse and said his latest project was a 'great set up for a white-knuckle entertaining ride'.

The Scotsman, who also served as a producer for the movie, said that when he first read the script, he knew it was a 'page-turner'.

"I think, 'is this something I could spend time with, a few months to a year with this character, with a story? Is this something that I would enjoy as an audience member? Is this something that has potential?' And it did all those things," he said while speaking of signing on.

And while the star has cultivated a reputation for being the 'King of the B movies', it doesn't bother him too much, as he knows audiences love these kinds of films.

"There’s a big audience for these kinds of movies. They’ve given me, very fortunately, a big fan base. And they're not the only movies I've made; I've made comedies, I’ve made animated movies, I’ve made musicals, I've made small thrillers," he added.

"But this, I would have to say, is my forte, my bread and butter. I love making them and I love watching them.

Plane comes out on Prime Video on May 19.
