Twisted new horror film M3GAN premieres with a near perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes

The film behind that infamous TikTok dance is set to take the world by storm.

The twisted new film M3GAN has scored an impressive 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the film’s TikTok dance is already taking the world by storm, some predict the unconventional horror will be their favourite movie of 2023.

M3GAN follows Gemma, played by Alison Williams (Get Out), who becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old recently orphaned niece, Cady.

Gemma enlists the help of a M3GAN prototype - a robot doll that uses AI - with her prime directive to 'physically and emotionally protect Cady'.

Cady quickly becomes attached to M3GAN, which results in the robot becoming more self-aware, and the consequences are deadly.

The film also stars Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey, and Stephane Garneau-Monten.

Universal Pictures

Gerard Johnstone directed the film, with the story developed by Akela Cooper (Malignant and The Nun 2) and the king of modern horror, James Wan (The Conjuring universe, Saw and Insidious).

This deliciously dark horror is set to be released on January 6, but critics privy to an advanced screening are already absolutely loved it.

Kristy Puchko for Mashable called M3GAN the most terrifying villain since Babadook.

She added: “Like Michael Myers sturdily stalking his victims, M3GAN excites us in her calm but determined — albeit more flashy — approach to her doomed victims. Every step in those dress shoes sparks a wave of goosebumps.”

Writer for The Guardian Peter Bradshaw called M3GAN an ‘entertainingly nasty film for the new year’.

While The Wrap's William Bibbiani praised Jenna Davis, who plays M3GAN, for her ‘subtle’ work in conveying the doll's chilling AI responses.

He wrote: “Davis is doing impressive and subtle work, hinting at the character’s emergence as a true artificial intelligence in ways the audience keys into but that the characters can be forgiven for missing.”

He added: “It’s all so intelligently crafted and thoughtful that M3GAN can’t be written off as a lark.

“Johnstone’s film captures the same alchemical blend of heart, humour and havoc you find only rarely, in crossover classics like Gremlins, and it yields more entertainment than most would-be blockbusters.”

M3GAN oughta be doing about 10 cartwheels right about now.
